Since
I first began my career in public service one thing has remained constant: I
have fought every step of the way to make Tennessee’s economy the strongest it could
be. Job growth must be the top priority
for state government. As the owner of a small business, I know how
difficult it is for startup and small businesses to operate in today’s economic
environment.
Tennessee needs a
governor who will work to create new jobs, and fight to keep the ones we
have. Good jobs mean security for the people of Tennessee. Good jobs permit parents to
support their families in a way that produces healthy, happy children, an
atmosphere free of uncertainty, and an optimism that will aid Tennessee children in school.
Since
being elected Lt. Governor of Tennessee,
my number one goal has been to do just that. Under my leadership the Senate has
created a business environment which has seen major manufacturing plants expand
or move to Tennessee. As Governor, I will continue to use my
experience to attract new jobs and new businesses to our state.
In
today’s economy, this will not be easy. Tennessee, like other states, has been
impacted negatively by the economic crisis in our country. I am determined that
Tennessee
will remain competitive in today’s changing economy. However, we will
continue to work hard to help our citizens adapt to new skills, new businesses
and new technologies.
The
U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that Tennessee’s unemployment rate at the end of
July was 10.8%, compared to a 9.7% rate nationally. This is simply
unacceptable and my Administration will utilize every weapon at our disposal to
bring new jobs and new businesses to Tennessee. One way to do that is to assure prospective
employers that Tennessee
will not have a state income tax. I will
defeat any effort to pass a state income tax in Tennessee.
We
know that our economy really colors everything Tennesseans dream of and hope
for. Education for children is directly tied to the ability of parents to
find and keep good paying jobs. Parents who are able to provide adequate food
and other necessities for their children do not have the stress and discontent
experienced by less fortunate families.
That
is why so many people worry about the economy.
